Hale Kilinahe: The Journal

MARCH 24, 1998

I'm supposed to write now. I'm actually too tired to say anything of substance, but Ryan gets all antsy if I go too long without writing an entry. Just like a woman sometimes, he is. Just kidding.

There are times when it seems as if our roles are reversed. He's often the more female of the two of us. He takes some things very personally.

Ryan's cousin Alex got married in June and his family threw him a reception on Sunday. Anybody from that side of the family was there, except for Todd, Ryan's brother, who was boycotting because he couldn't bring his girlfriend; and a couple of other cousins who were working. The happy couple looked really happy. They circulated among the family. Uncle Al, Alex's dad, was the emcee and made each and every person introduce himself.

Everyone fussed over Katie, but everyone fussed more over Trevor. Trevor is the son of Ryan's cousin Jennifer. He's almost a year old and is a little demon. Cute as hell, but he's going to be a terror.

We're having a late-reception-type shindig, too, in about two weeks. The date has actually been set since about the civil war but there was just too much going on before, so we've made really short notice reservations at a restaurant and are frantically calling friends and family.

This is totally selfish of me, but everything that happens to Al's kids always ends up a way bigger deal than what happens to Ryan and me. Darryl and Jen got married, they got a big private room in a hotel and a seven-course Chinese dinner. Now I sound ungrateful. We got a seven-course Chinese dinner, too. But we didn't get a minivan. And Trevor is just so smart and cute that Ryan's grandmother will talk for half an hour about Trevor before she even notices that Katie's in the room.

For his mom, though, Katie is the cat's pajamas, and that's all that really matters, I guess. Maybe it's 'cause they actually got married before Jen was knocked up.

I'm so homesick. I'll never go home again. That makes me sad. I miss my family.
