Hale Kilinahe: The Journal

AUGUST 9, 1998

Just now I was watching a show about male strippers on A&E. And I have come to the conclusion -- after four years of cohabitation -- that naked men look funny. Men are ugly and lumpy.

Don't get me wrong. When men are dressed, I adore them. There's something attractive in every man in the world, whether it be a physical trait or something else. Men have often been my best friends, like Ryan. I just don't want to see them undressed.

(Er, excluding my husband.)

It makes sense that even women's magazine features photos of undressed women: because the female body is beautiful. I freely admit to having crushes on women on occasion. (I also want to kick Jennifer Love Hewitt's skinny little ass.) Most of the time, of course, it has nothing to do with bodies -- it's just some intangible characteristic or other I find endearing. Like the look in Catherine Zeta-Jones' eyes in the "Zorro" previews (I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm entranced by the trailers). Or the way Terri Clark wears her cowboy hat.

But if you want to talk bodies, Salma Hayek is just so gorgeous. Jewel's plain pretty. Minnie Driver, or Mira Sorvino, even. Hispanic women often catch my attention -- it's probably the hair (Salma's, for example). I think Asian women are often beautiful too.

I think because I grew up in the south surrounded by white folks I'm often attracted to people (of both genders) of different ethnicities. I love Asian guys. I'm married to an Asian man. Chow Yun Fat's a babe. Jackie Chan -- despite having his face broken many times -- exudes a certain charm.
