Hale Kilinahe: The Journal

September 7, 1998

On Saturday night, without much planning, we headed off to go to the Kam Drive-In. As of last night, it's no more. Even though that was the first time I went, I still felt like it was a terrible loss.

The last time I went to a drive-in movie I had just graduated from high school and was with Vicki and several of our girlfriends. It was more a social outing than a movie outing. I don't even remember what was playing. And I know now that I didn't appreciate it -- the drive-in experience -- for what it was. I didn't know that it could very well have been the last time I'd watch a flick from a car.

My happiest childhood memory was at a drive in. Watching "The Cat from Outer Space" -- the same movie Ryan remembers as his first drive-in flick. I was five, my brother was three, and we were piled into the back of my parents' station wagon with sleeping bags and pillows and footed pajamas. Again, I don't remember much about the movie that played, but just being there was great.

I want to provide moments like these for Katie. We just have to find other things to do, I guess.

Memories. That's all that's left. All the good stuff, the stuff with character, is gone. Kam Drive-In. Honolulu Book Shops. Radio Free Hawaii. The Groove. Kelly's. Hell, I hated the food at Kelly's, but it just screamed local, it just epitomized home. And it's not there anymore.
