Hale Kilinahe: The Journal

March 4, 1999

For Girls' Day, which was yesterday, we bought Katie her first set of Duplo. Duplo are basically Legos for babies.

For the longest time, I dreamed of the day I would give Katie blocks. It's a milestone; sort of the first step into childhood. This particular set of Duplo came in a big yellow box that looks like a bus. It can store all the blocks and some of the countless other toys we've collected. Pretty nifty.

Her toys are so important to me that when we buy her toys, they have to be the child-psychiatrist-tested, high-contrast, super-brainy toys.

The thing is, her absolute favorite toy in the world is a plastic straw. Any plastic straw. She will ignore her stacking rings and her squeaky cloth shapes and her mirror rattle if there is a plastic straw within fifty feet of her. And heaven forbid if you've been to McDonald's and have a drink, because she will make every attempt to take that straw from you and she will cry if she fails and keep crying until you give up and give her the damn straw already.

We've spent big money on things for her to crawl over on the way to a plastic straw.

Another problem is that I am a baby girl clothes junkie. Her dresser is brimming with adorable frilly clothes because I CAN'T STOP BUYING THEM! Hello, my name is Jennifer and I'm a layette addict. Overalls and dresses and shorts suits and shoes up the wazoo, all for my little lady. And she looks absolutely stunning in each and every outfit.

On the other hand, if she were a boy, I wouldn't have this problem because boys' clothes are no fun. I would buy five shirts and five shorts and be done with it because they are all just so boring.
