Hale Kilinahe: The Journal

August 23, 1999

MY LITTLE BROTHER is going to be a daddy.

He entered the Navy fresh out of high school six years ago, and aside from a few days when we both happened to be visiting our parents at the same time, I haven't seen him in person since. We exchange Christmas cards and talk on the phone now and then.

It's definitely easier to appreciate a sibling when they've left the nest; when they're not hogging the bathroom or embarrassing you in front of your friends at school. We totally hated each other at times, and we also both defended the other against our enemies. He woke me up every morning for three years by playing Metallica at full volume. He punched one of my boyfriends and threatened to kill another and probably meant it.

Nobody even knew he was dating anyone. He's not the kind of person to talk about that stuff, so it came as much as a surprise as anything could. Mom and dad say he sounds happy, and that's all that matters.
