What have I done?

My neighbor's husband is in Iraq. She has a twelve-year-old son and they're pretty much alone, and I know how bad it sucks to have a dad away during the holidays, so I invited them to have Thangsgiving dinner with us tomorrow. And I decided I'd do everything myself.

On the menu: lasagne (I don't really like turkey. Yeah, I'm weird), green bean casserole (not the old fashioned cream-of-mushroom-soup thing. Got the recipe from America's Test Kitchen, in fact, using fresh mushrooms), stuffing, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie (thankfully, my husband bought the pumpkin with the spices in it so all I really had to do was the crust).

I always think I can do more than I actually can. One time, I tried to bake an apple pie from scratch when only Zac was home. That was a nightmare. Somehow, in the transaction, I seem to forget that I have three kids.

The Live Aid concerts are now on DVD. I did not know this. Now, do I want that, or this for Christmas?

---

Zac said Alex's name today. He still refuses to call Katie by her name. He calls her something that sounds like "teh-teh". He's just playing with her, though. I know he can say "Katie" but I think he loves to torment her already.

Hope it went well! You're oodles braver and more energetic than I am.. our dinner was Zippy's heat-and-serve turkey meal, with a half turkey, mashed potatoes & gravy, stuffing, rolls, and cranberry relish for $30. Add salad and Safeway pecan pie. Hardest part was the dishes. And you know what? It was actually good.

Is is just me or has anyone else noticed that Hawaii is contributing a lot more troops than its per capita share to the Iraq war? Who decides how many troops from a particular state are shipped to a combat zone? And why are they picking on Hawaii? I sincerely hope it isn't due to the fact that Hawaii was one of the handful of states that didn't vote for Bush.

It sure seems like it. We've lost pretty close to 50 guys over there this year, too, which seems a bit disproportionate. I don't know. I'm trying not to be cynical. But it's hard.
