Ringu

Gotta say, I liked Ring better. Although Ringu is not without its charm.

Ring had a much fuller, deeper backstory. You really knew what was going on, especially if you watch the featurette called "don't watch this" in the bonus features on the DVD menu. However, Ring's protagonist is Rachel. Rachel is not the most sympathetic of movie heroines. Her Japanese counterpart, Reiko, is an ordinary woman in a bind. Rachel is a high-maintenace diva.

Ringu has a very strong supernatural element, like a good obake story. The American version's ghost-story content is only hinted at.

The deadly tape itself? Waaaaay creepier in the American version. And used more effectively throughout the movie, too.
