Hale Kilinahe: The Journal

Madonna is getting so weird. She's one of my personal heroes, but since she's been a mommy, I've wondered if Lourdes is keeping her from sleeping. I guess she lives in England now, so she's got an accent like she was born and raised there or something. All of the sudden, she's British. I guess it's her newest fashion accessory. Speaking of fashion, she performed on the VH1 fashion awards. She sang her new single in a rubber suit, and then she won an award and accepted it in this gawdawful Belle-Beauty-and-the-Beast getup. And the hair. Ick.

Have I ever mentioned that I want to be a chef? Food and cooking are my passions in life, next to my kid. I love Katie, but she doesn't taste good. Just kidding. Someday, Hawaii's greatest chefs will be Alan, Sam, Roy and Anne (since I don't think a chef named Jennifer would be taken very seriously. Anne is my middle name). Since I am a true foodie, I watch TVFN nonstop every day, except for when the daily Law & Order reruns on A&E are Chris Noth episodes. Man, is grilling the only thing Bobby Flay can do? Why does he get two shows? Two would be good if he actually (gasp!) cooked in one of them. Maybe lose "Grillin & Chillin and bring back "Taste" or "Molto/Mediterranean Mario". I adore Mario Batali. Not much stage presence, but obviously oozes talent. And if any of you execs are listening, I beseech you (down on my knees) to cancel "Pressure Cooker". Ai yi.

So Saturday was Halloween. I haven't celebrated a traditional Halloween since I was ten, but now that we have a child, we have to do child things; so we decorated Ryan's mom's house with cotton spider webs and paper skeletons. Earlier in the week, she bought a plastic pumpkin carving kit and on the package were some really neat design suggestions. My favorite was a crescent moon and stars design. We picked out a big-mama pumpkin and I decided we'd use that unique design. Ryan actually drew on the pumpkin, but I scooped out all the guts and carved it. I was so proud of it, and it was actually a lot of fun. Some people think it's icky, but I got a kick out of zoology lab, so I'm weird. My friend Greg was in town and a big picnic was arranged in his honor. We spent much of our afternoon there and returned just in time to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters in all kinds of costumes.

Now that Katie's becoming a child, some simple things have become so important to me. Christmas this year will be of utmost importance. It will be her first, and although she won't remember it, it has to be perfect.
