Good Deal With Dave Lieberman

Dave is cuter than a basket of puppies.

I don't know how old he is, but he looks like a college student. More specifically, he looks like that cute freshman boy who lived in your dorm. He has a friendly, carefree, little brother-ish personality that the other FN personalities are sorely lacking. I think they're really on to something here. Lots of college kids love cooking shows and are looking for ways to stretch their food budgets. Dave's show seems squarely aimed at the college crowd.

I keep hearing comparisons to Jamie Oliver in regard to Dave, and where I can see where those comparisons are coming from, I think Dave is much mellower and more entertaining.

I keep waiting for a savvy FN host to do a side-by-side comparison thing. It's almost always cheaper to buy mostly fresh ingredients and make your own meals from scratch. I see the craziest stuff on the network lately: Ray-Ray used microwave popcorn in a recent episode and, somehow, Sandra Lee still has a show. So it's nice to see a down-to-earth, likeable host who stresses the importance of fresh, seasonal food. I think it would be great to have side-by-side cost breakdowns for meals and I think Dave would be the perfect guy to do that.

The most recent episode I caught was a multiple salad lunch thing--curried chicken salad in Bibb lettuce cups, pesto pasta salad and pan-grilled caesars. I am dying for an opportunity to make those.

I thought the show was good right away. I liked his personality and the fact that he was cooking for his Mom and Grandma. Although, I did think that he made too many salads for one meal! I also liked the look of his kitchen and the photos on the frig. I think the show will be a success. I agree that Sandra Lee needs to be off the air, but you gotta love Rachael, microwave popcorn or not! Yum-O!
